How Many Days Do You Need for Egypt?

If you want to combine Cairo and a Nile cruise, the absolute minimum is around 6 to 7 days. This is just enough time to visit Cairo (Pyramids, Old Cairo, museums), do a 4-day Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor, and move between destinations without completely rushing connections.

If you are planning your trip, it helps to first understand the two main parts of this itinerary in detail:

Important Travel Note (Arrival in Cairo)

Most international flights into Cairo arrive in the evening, which is important because it usually means you cannot safely connect to a domestic flight to Aswan on the same day. Even if connections exist on paper, delays and immigration make it risky.

We stayed at Novotel Cairo Airport mainly because it is next to the terminal, they offer a free airport shuttle, and it removes all stress on arrival day. If you arrive in the morning, you may be able to continue directly to Aswan, but in the evening arrival scenario you should plan at least one night in Cairo.

Day by Day Itinerary (Minimum Version)

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

Arrive in Cairo in the evening and stay near the airport to reset and prepare for an early domestic flight. This is a transition day, not a sightseeing day.

Day 2: Cairo to Aswan + Start Nile Cruise (Aswan High Dam + Philae Temple)

Early morning flight from Cairo to Aswan, followed by direct transfer to your cruise boat and the start of your Nile cruise experience. For a full breakdown of what the cruise feels like day to day, see: Sailing the Nile: Our 4 Days from Aswan to Luxor.

Day 3: Nile Cruise (Kom Ombo + Edfu)

First full cruise day with temple stops depending on itinerary, alternating between guided visits and sailing time along the Nile.

Day 4: Nile Cruise (Luxor Highlights)

Arrival in Luxor. Explore Luxor’s temples and valley of the Kings.

Day 5: Arrive in Luxor + Luxor highlights

Check out from your cruise in Luxor and visit the remaining highlights of Luxor. Or just rest at your hotel pool and do some souvenir shopping at the Luxor bazaar in the evening.

Day 6: Luxor to Cairo + free afternoon

Morning flight back to Cairo. Explore Old Cairo. We stayed at the Novotel Cairo El Borg in Zamalek. For deeper planning, see: Where to Stay in Cairo: Zamalek vs Downtown vs Giza (Best Areas Explained)

Day 7: Cairo (Pyramids + Museum) + Departure

Full day in Cairo visiting the Pyramids of Giza and optionally the Grand Egyptian Museum before departure in the evening. We had a flight that left Cairo late evening. If you do not have this option, I recommend flying out the next morning to avoid rushing.

What This Itinerary Actually Feels Like

This is a minimum viable Egypt itinerary. It works because the Nile cruise acts as your structured core, while Cairo is split into arrival and departure flexibility. It is fast, but not chaotic if flights line up well. If you want to improve it, the first upgrade is always adding one extra night in Cairo at the end, which turns the trip from efficient into comfortable.
